What is the Skin Barrier?

The skin barrier, or stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of your skin. It acts as a protective shield, keeping essential moisture in and harmful irritants, bacteria, and allergens out. Think of your skin cells as bricks and the lipids (fats) surrounding them as the mortar.

What Are Ceramides?

Ceramides are a type of lipid (fat) naturally found in high concentrations in the uppermost layers of the skin. In fact, they make up about 50% of the skin's composition. They are the essential "mortar" that holds the skin cells together.

Signs of a Damaged Barrier

  • Chronic dryness or flakiness
  • Redness and inflammation
  • Increased sensitivity (products that used to be fine now sting)
  • Tight, uncomfortable feeling

How to Repair It

If your barrier is compromised, strip your routine back to basics: a gentle cleanser, a ceramide-rich moisturizer, and sunscreen. Avoid all physical scrubs, chemical exfoliants, and active ingredients like retinoids until the skin has healed.
